Detailed Rules:

Due to time constraints, this tournament will be run in multiple rounds.  The first 2 or 3 rounds will be Free-For-All matches, where the top 2 players advance (as outlined below).  The final round will consist of a double elimination bracket (possibly single elimination if we begin running out of time).

Rules for Early Rounds

1)         Top 2 players advance to the next round.  Placement in rounds will seed future rounds, so continue to play until the match is complete.

2)         Single elimination.  i.e., if you are not in the top 2 of a match, you are out of the tournament.

3)         Each player will have 3 stocks.

4)         In addition to 3 stocks, a 7 minute time limit will be also be applied.

4.a)                  If the time ends before the match is fully completed, then 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place for the match will be determined first by the stock remaining and then by PERCENTAGE.  (Example, if the match is down to P1 at 80% on his last stock, P2 at 0% on his last stock, P3 at 81% on his last stock, and P4 is eliminated, then the final results for that match are P2 first, P1 second, P3 third, P4 fourth.)

4.b)                  If the time ends and two or more players have the same stock count and the same percentage, then the standard sudden death round will be played for those players.  (This is very unlikely to occur.)

5)         Stage will be selected at random from the following possibilities:

Battlefield

Final Destination

Smashville

Yoshi’s Island (Brawl version)

6)         Characters are chosen quadruple blind.  This will be done on (more or less) an honor basis.  However, if any player feels like another player is intentionally waiting to select a character in order to counter pick someone, then tournament staff may be asked to ensure that the quadruple blind rule is enforced.

7)         Items are set to OFF and NONE.

8)         If there is a problem with controller port selection, this can be cleared up by member of the staff.

9)         Playing with a gamer tag is encouraged but not required.

Rules for Final Round

1)         Those who are not eliminated in the first Rounds, will participate in a double-elimination tournament.

2)         Matches are played best 2 of 3 games for the winners bracket; best 1 of 1 for the losers bracket.

3)         Each player will have 3 stocks.

4)         In addition to 3 stocks, a 7 minute time limit will also be applied.

4.a)                  If the time ends before the match is fully completed, then winner will be determined first by the stock remaining and then by PERCENTAGE.  (Example, if the match is down to P1 at 80% on his last stock, P2 at 0% on his last stock, then the P1 has won.)

4.b)                  If the time ends and both players have the same stock count and the same percentage, then the standard sudden death round will be played to determine the winner.  (If this causes unforeseen complications, a “super sudden death” match may be played quickly if necessary.  This is very unlikely to occur.)

5)         Items are set to OFF and NONE.

6)         Advanced Slob Picks (this does not apply to losers bracket)

6.a)                  For the first game of the match, characters are chosen double blind.  If either player feels like the other player is intentionally waiting to select a character in order to counter pick, then someone from tournament staff may be asked to ensure that the double blind rule is enforced.

6.b)                  For the second and third games, the following actions are taken IN ORDER

the loser of the previous game chooses a stage

the winner of the previous game chooses a character

the loser of the previous game chooses a character

(Example:  If P1 beats P2 in the first game, then the following might occur:  P2 chooses to go to Luigi’s Mansion, P1 chooses to change his character from Peach to Fox, P2 chooses to remain as his original character.)

7)         Stage Selection

7.a)                  Someone may not counter pick a level on which he/she last won.

7.b)                  After the players have chosen their starting characters, both players may each select one and only one stage to BAN from the entire match.  For example, if P1 does not like playing on Rainbow Cruise then he/she may ban it; similarly, if P2 does not like playing on Final Destination, he/she may ban that stage as well.

7.c)                  For the first game, a stage will be selected at random from the following “neutral” stages:

Battlefield

Final Destination

Smashville

Yoshi’s Island (Brawl version)

7.d)                  The following stages are BANNED.  No player may choose any of these stages.

8)                     The finals match will be played best 3 of 5 (4 of 7 if time permits) rather than 2 of 3.

9)                     If there is a problem with controller port selection, this can be cleared up by member of the staff.

General Rules for the Entire Tournament

1)         BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER.  We will have controllers at the tournament if you do not have one or if you do not bring your own, but it would be ideal if you could bring and use your own controller.  Besides, this will help prevent complaints like “this controller is bad.”  Also, most of the controllers at the tournament will be GameCube controllers, so if you prefer to play with a Wii controller, you may need to talk to tournament staff before you play.

2)         Controller modifications (beyond aesthetic changes) such as “turbo” buttons, “auto short hop” buttons, etc. will not be allowed.  You may use a third party controller that has these features, but if you use them then you will be disqualified.

3)         You are responsible for your own nametag and control preferences. Always check to make sure you are using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. If a match is to be restarted due to controller functions, it must be agreed upon by both parties.

4)         Banned tactics

4.a)                  Use of tactics with the intent to excessively stall a game is banned.  These tactics include but are not limited to overuse of infinite combos, or “infinites.”  Any infinite that continues beyond 300% is considered excessive stalling.  Examples of these infinites include Dedede’s infinite standing grab, Dedede’s chain grab against a wall, Marth’s choke chain grab against Lucas, Fox’s shine (down-b) against a wall, Falco’s laser lock against a wall, most of Ice Climbers’ (multiple) chain grabs, etc.  This does not mean you cannot use these tactics, it simply means that you cannot use them for the express purpose of stalling the game or beyond 300% damage to your opponent.  (NOTE:  This is not the same as camping, which is allowed.  Running away does not equal stalling.)

4.b)                  Tactics that prevent the game from being completed are banned.  These tactics are usually glitches that freeze the game or lock a character in place.

4.c)                  Meta Knight’s infinite cape glitch is banned.

5)                     If a game ends with Bowser doing his suicide klaw and it ends in sudden death, the sudden death will be ignored and that game will count as a win for Bowser.

6)                     IF YOU ARE CALLED TO PLAY A MATCH AND YOU DO NOT SHOW UP WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES YOU WILL LOSE THE MATCH BY DEFAULT.  Please show up when you are called.  We are pressed for time.  Some exceptions will be made (for example, if we know you are in the bathroom, we can wait and extra minute or two), but in general PLEASE make sure you arrive with punctuality.

FINAL NOTES
